Choosing the Right Wall Tile
Ceramic vs porcelain: This distinction matters more when choosing a floor tile, where strength and frost resistance come into play. For a wall tile, colour, size and finish are the more important factors.
Gloss vs matt finish: This really comes down to personal preference. Gloss has more light-reflective qualities, though with modern lighting this matters less than it used to.
Choosing a size: It used to be the case that small tiles were needed for small spaces, but that's no longer true — a larger format tile can actually make a small space look bigger, with fewer grout joints to clean. Don't be afraid to choose a large tile, and if your tiler insists on small tiles only, it might be time for a new tiler.
Once you've chosen a tile, don't forget grout and sealer — see our Sealers + Cleaners range, and check our Fixing Guides for laying advice.
FAQs
What's the difference between a wall tile and a floor tile?
The main differences come down to wearability, body strength and slip resistance. A tile with a low wearability rating may wear in high-traffic areas, making it suitable for walls only. Many ceramic tiles simply aren't strong enough for floor use but are perfectly fine on walls. And a tile may be strong enough for floors but have too low a slip rating to be safely used underfoot. Every tile on our site is labelled as suitable for wall, floor, or both.
Can floor tiles be used on walls?
Generally yes, but heavy stone tiles need specialist fixing if used on walls — this is something your architect or designer should advise on when specifying.
Can wall tiles be used on floors?
If we classify a tile as wall only, generally not.
How much wall tile do I need to order?
It depends on the size of the tile. Mosaics generally have less wastage due to their size, while larger formats need roughly 10-15% extra. Tiles 600x600mm and above (including 1200x600mm) are more complex, as a tile layout is usually needed — best left to your tiler or architect.
Do wall tiles need to be sealed?
Normally only if they're made of natural stone.
Do you offer free samples?
Yes — up to 5 free samples, with a $15 postage fee that's redeemable if you place an order over $200.
