Terracotta Tiles: Natural Clay and Porcelain Terracotta-Look Options

Terracotta has been used to floor Mediterranean homes for centuries, and it's having a real moment in Australian renovations right now — from heritage-style courtyards to modern alfresco entertaining areas. At Tiles4Less, we stock two distinct types of terracotta tile, so it's worth understanding the difference before you choose.

Natural terracotta is made from fired clay, giving each tile genuine colour variation, texture and character that can't be fully replicated. It's a traditional, breathable material well suited to both indoor and outdoor Australian conditions, but it is porous — meaning it needs to be sealed before grouting and re-sealed periodically afterwards to protect against staining and moisture. Our natural terracotta range includes tiles sourced from Spain and Vietnam, in sizes from 150mm through to 300mm, in classic square and plank formats.

Porcelain terracotta-look tiles give you the same warm, earthy aesthetic with none of the sealing or maintenance requirements. Because they're fired porcelain rather than natural clay, they're non-porous, more resistant to chipping, and easier to keep clean — making them a popular choice for busy households, wet areas, and larger-format outdoor paving. Our porcelain terracotta-look range includes textured and aged finishes in sizes up to 600x600mm.

Both options are suitable for internal and external use, including walls, floors, and outdoor entertaining areas, and can be used together to blend a natural terracotta feature (such as a step tread or hallway) with lower-maintenance porcelain terracotta-look tiles elsewhere in the same space.
